Welcome to Vegan Spots
August of 2016, I went for my routine doctor visit expecting nothing new, the usual refill for my blood pressure medication, cholesterol medication, and to talk about watching what I eat and how I need to exercise. But this time I received some additional bad news, I was diagnosed as a diabetic after my blood test results showed my A1C was 6.9.
My Doctor had already planned to put me on Metformin and change my lifestyle and diet. Seeing what my dad went thru as a diabetic put an immediate fear in me. I started to panic and seemed hopeless. I told my Doctor to give me 6 months, I am going to fix this, and I refused the medication.
I went home that night, and decided I am going to go Vegan for 3 months and do my blood test again. For these 3 months, I only ate plant based foods. Surprisingly, I still managed to enjoy my usual sweets, but not as often and I made sure they were Vegan as well. I started to read up more, talk to people I knew that were Vegan, and there were not too many. I started reading labels and controlling my portions. I started cooking more at home and when eating out made Vegan friendly choices. I also started looking for local Vegan restaurants in my neighborhood and many cities that I travel to thru out the year.
I went for my 3 months checkup after going Vegan and the results were the following:
My A1C went from 6.9 to 5.7
I stopped taking Cholesterol medicine as my blood test showed normal levels
I stopped taking blood pressure medications (I used to take 2 types)
Some added benefits I was not expecting:
Lost 43lbs
Stopped snoring (I occasionally still do snore after having a few drinks, but not like I used to on a daily basis)
I no longer get heart burns
Swelling in my gums are all gone
After 2 years my A1C continues to improve, it is currently at 5.1, and my cholesterol also continues to improve and so are many other nagging issues I had before going Vegan.
I am not saying my experience and the steps I took is the sure fire way to rid you of your medial conditions. I used to ignore and dismiss people when they used to tell me a plant based diet has changed their life, but now I believe that it CAN work for anyone who is willing to do it and stick with it. Its not a diet or a fad, but a permanent lifestyle change
